In my latest YouTube video, I share a time-saving tip for SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) users to streamline commenting and uncommenting code. As a mentor to developers, I’ve seen how small tricks like this can transform your workflow, and I’m excited to show you how to save precious seconds in your database tasks. Watch the video to see this technique in action and level up your SSMS skills!

I demonstrate this tip using a test database scenario where I drop and recreate a table for testing. Many developers manually add double dashes (–) to comment out code or delete them to uncomment, a slow and tedious process, especially with large scripts. In the video, I show a faster way using SSMS’s powerful hotkeys, which I’ve taught countless mentees to use efficiently.

Here’s the trick: highlight your code block and use these shortcuts:

  • Control + K, Control + C: Instantly comments out selected code by adding double dashes.
  • Control + K, Control + U: Quickly uncomments by removing double dashes.

These hotkeys work flawlessly for any code block size, making them essential for rapid development and debugging. In the video, I walk you through a live example, showing just how quick and seamless this process is.

During Mentoring, I’ve watched developers waste minutes manually editing comments, and I always say, “There’s a better way!” This shortcut is one I swear by, and it’s a staple in my teaching because it’s so effective. My rule? If a technique saves you 10 seconds on a repetitive task, it’s worth learning. These hotkeys—Control + K, Control + C for commenting and Control + K, Control + U for uncommenting—deliver that and more.

SSMS is full of hidden gems like these shortcuts, and I love sharing them to help you work smarter. By adopting this tip, you’ll boost productivity, reduce errors from manual edits, and free up time for more critical tasks. Whether you’re new to SSMS or a seasoned pro, this trick will make your coding smoother.

Don’t just take my word for it—watch the video to see the hotkeys in action and discover why they’re a must-know for SSMS users. Check it out now and start commenting code like a pro! Subscribe for more practical SQL tips to enhance your development workflow.
