There are 2 perspectives here to the DBA on vacation, typically in an organization with only a single DBA so there is no cross coverage when someone goes on vacation.

The view as the DBA: I have done everything that I can to prepare the systems for vacation, but still I end up getting called for some regular maintenance job that is failing. I guess I will have to cancel the plans I had with my family today and make my way to an internet café in order to help sort this out. Now I need to explain this to my spouse, and that is not going to be fun.

The view of the employer: What can we do? Every time our DBA goes on vacation some fails. I wish we had a backup DBA available for these types of situations.
